About Peru

Andean womenPeru is one of the main touristic destinations with most diversity in landscapes, a country where is possible to find all the climates of the world, also it offers us the great possibility to rediscover its fascinating and rich historical legacy along its vast territory, its ancestral customs and communities integrated deeply with the Pachamama (Mother earth), in this way, we don’t need to cross borders, in Peru is possible to pass from the abundant humidity   of the jungle to the endless and arid coastal desert, previously having crossed the spectaculars mountains of the Andeswith eternal snow that overcome six thousand meters of height. Besides to the natural diversity, always is possible to approach to its main archaeological sites, cultural heritage legacy of the successive civilizations that have made the history of the country, from Chavin de Huantar (Mother of the Peruvian Cultures, with its nailed heads), Paracas (with its cloaks and impressive cranial trepanation), Nazca (with its  well known and mysterious lines and bimorphs figures), Mochica ( with the impressive ornamentation found to different members of the elite of recent discovering like The Lord of Sipan and its varied ceramics), Chimu (with its the biggest mud  city in the world,  Chan chan) and the well know Incas ( with the unequalable Machu Picchu city). Also we must to mention the colonial cities like the color Trujillo,  Cusco of mixed race or the chaotic and captivating Lima with its historic centre.

 

Political regime

Democracy presidential. The regime is relatively stable since 2000. The current President is  Alan Garcia Perez.

Spanish, Quechua and Aymara

Diftheria, Tetanus, typhoid, hepatitis A.


For the jungle: yellow fever, malaria, the risks are few with the exception of the long circuts.

 

Climate

Peru, has a varied climate (in general a tropical climate), influenced by the Andean mountain range, equatorial latitude and the Humbolt current (cold) and of the Niño current (warm), summers and winters are continue according the region, however we  would define the seasons:
Summer: December 15 to April 14
Winter: April 15 to December 14

 

Coast: Hot and damp with clear skies in summer; with an average temperature of 26ºC, without rainfalls. Warm in winter with an average temperature of 16ºC; without rain falls, but with high relative humidity and cloudy.


Mountain range: In summer it is hot and dry during the day, warm and cold during the nights, clear skies (cold dawns), with rainfalls. In winter warm and cold, with few rain falls.


Jungle: Climate completely tropical, with rain falls during all the year ( a lot in summer), hot and damp. Annual average temperature 28ºC.

 

Currency

The  currency in Peru is Nuevo Sol (S/.), with coins of 10, 20 and 50 centimos and 1, 2 and 5 Nuevos Soles and bills of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Nuevos Soles.

 

Security

The main problem is the theft in the big cities.

 

Population

27 million of inhabitants; of this quantity 70% are indigenous  (specially Quechuas and Aymaras), 25% are of mixed race and 5% are of European origin.


Hour

The Peruvian hour is set at 5 h after the GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) and it is similar to the EST (Eastern Standard Time) of the United States.

Huaraz: hot during the day and cold in the night
Arequipa: hot during the day and warm during the night
Cusco: sunny in the day and cold in the night
Titicaca lake: Sunny in the day and cold during the night

Shopping

Golden and silver country. The prices are affordable. The handicrafts are really nice and relatively cheap (alpaca, skin, wood, ponchos, local musical instruments, rugs, etc).


Gastronomy

Peru has a diverse gastronomy with different kinds of dishes like ceviche (fish cooked only with lemon juice), papa a la huacaina (potatoes covered in hot sauce made with white cheese), and the wel known Pisco souer, made with green lemon and chopped ice… it is really delicious.


Best season

From April to November. Althought the days are warm, the nights could be cold in the mountains. Generally, nice blue sky special to see the beauty of the landscapes.


Altitude sickness

It is necessary a good acliamtization to carry out adventure activities in the mountain range.


Security

Our vocation is to accompany you in the footpath of the adventure, there where you go. However, some activities such as rafting or climbing demand respecting some security rules. About  Huaraz

Huaraz is the capital of Ancash departament (State), it is located at 3100 masl in el valley of Santa River to 400 Km  Northern of Lima, in the begin of Callejon de Huaylas, this city is used as departure point for the most interesting trekking circuits and climbing routes in the mountains of Cordilleras Blanca and Huayhuash. Who love mountaineering, trekking, skiing  and other adventure sports meet in this city to start their fascinating adventure to visit the most beautiful natural landscapes of Southamerica and of the world. 
The Santa River, splits the Cordillera de los Andes in two spectacular mountain ranges that surround the Callejon de Huaylas: Cordillera Blanca (White mountain range) with its peaks covered with eternal snows, and the Cordillera Negra (Black mountain range), of magic dark contrast, they do the Callejon de Huaylas a True Natural Paradise.
Huaraz city, is an old town, but it shows buildings relatively new, because most of them were rebuilt after of the catastrophic earthquake of 1970.
Nowdays Huaraz has two important economical activities: Tourism and mining.


How to get in Huaraz

Usually we get in Huaraz by land from Lima, taking the Panamerican highway to Pativilca, where we take the other paved road up to Huaraz. The journey last approximately 7 hours (408 km). Also exist other alternative routes like:
Lima – Casma – Huaraz (524 Km, 8 hours) or Lima – Santa – Huallanca – Huaraz (720 Km, 10 hours), this road is moderately difficult , however its reward is great as to cross the Cordillera Negra and to see from there the Cordillera Blanca.


Climate of Cordilleras Blanca and Huayhuash

Huaraz has a dry climate, clear blue sky, these are characteristic for this city of which altitude is 3100 masl. The region has two seasons well marked: from May to October is Summer, good season to carry out a trekking and climbing tours; meanwhile from November to April it is rainy season. The average temperature in the day is 18 ºC, with tendency to get cold in the afternoons, falling to 7ºC in the nights. It is convenient to wear sun glasses and sun cream, because the solar radiation in the Andes is strong, also is recommendable to take good clothes to protect of the cold nights.


When to go

The best season to carry out trekking and climbing tours in the Cordilleras Blanca and Huayhuash is during dry season mainly from May to August. Also is a good idea to visit during the months of April and September. In all ways, all visitors must to be prepared for the occasional rains, snows or hails even during dry season.
